The Bulletin has pairs of tickets to give away for the trio recital at the Italian Cultural Institute
Chamber music collective Brussels Muzieque has concocted an evening of musical impressionism performed by a harp, flute and viola trio on 11 January.

Featuring works by composers Claude Debussy, Nino Rota and Serge Prokofiev, the event is part of musIICa, a series organised in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Brussels (Istituto Italiano di Cultura).

For each concert, at least one Italian artist appears together with musicians of other nationalities. All of the artists are regular performers in Belgium's top musical institutions.

The programme is titled impressionism due to Debussy's dreamy and sensual compositions with short melodic motives, unique instrumental timbres and a timeless quality. The influential French composer opposed the artistic traditions of the time in a similar vein to the movement's painters Monet, Manet and Degas.

Debussy's 1915 Sonata for flute, viola and harp was an unusual setting for the period, but became immediately popular thanks to its colourful bright sound. It inspired other 20th-century composers such as Arnold Bax and his Elegiac Trio.

Strikingly, both compositions were created in the wake of dramatic events, World War One for Debussy's Sonata and the Eastern rising in Ireland for Bax's Elegiac Trio. Inevitably, a melancholy and veiled sadness runs through the works.

Brussels Muzieque artists for the occasion are Matteo Delmonte (solo flute at La Monnaie), Monika Mlynarczyk (co-principal viola at La Monnaie) and Emma Wauters (harp professor at Leuven LUCA school of arts).

Together, they also perform a sonata by Nino Rota, an Italian composer who is world famous for his film scores (Fellini, Visconti and Coppola), and a transcript of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet by Gilad Cohen.
